US Navy WWII Veteran USS LSM LSMR Association Reunion Visits WI Maritime Museum

On Friday, August 17, 2007 a group of 66 WWII Navy Veterans arrived in the City of Manitowoc at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum via bus from Milwaukee. The Vets are members of the USS LSM LSMR Association, which stands for USS Landing Ship Medium / Landing Ship Medium Rocket Association. This amphibious craft was initially used for transporting personnel and supplies but was later used in combat once they were outfitted with rockets. Crew was trained at Great Lakes Naval Training Center and Little Creek Amphibious Base in Norfolk, VA.

The USS LSM LSMR Association was formed in 1989 and meets annually in different locations around the country. Current President is David Miller. This years reunion is in Milwaukee.

MSG. USAF Retired 1947-1965 and US Navy 1944-1947 Lloyd Lewis, who at one time lived in Manitowoc, but now resides in Omaha, NE is part of the association and was with the group as they toured the Wisconsin Maritime Museum.

The group was welcomed and greeted upon arrival at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum by Mayor Kevin Crawford.
