INTRODUCTION TO THE CEMETERY

Evergreen Cemetery is a city-owned & operated cemetery consisting of 79 acres with an additional 27 acres a few blocks west of its current site on Michigan Avenue. The Cemetery has approximately 5,000 spaces still available for purchase on its current site, and we anticipate selling spaces here for approximately 30 years. We provide services for traditional and cremation in-ground burials, as well as cremation columbarium niches for you and/or your pets. (Cremated pets are allowed only in Companions Courtyard (section X)). All lots and niches include perpetual care, which consists of services such as grass mowing/trimming, weed control, watering flowers, and general grounds maintenance, which is necessary to keep our Cemetery known as one of the most beautiful and best-kept cemeteries in the State. At this time, there is no schedule in place as to when spaces may be sold in our new cemetery property – tentatively known as Evergreen West. Trees were planted there in 2003 to give them time to mature and beautify the property for when it does open up for sales and burials.

Evergreen Cemetery averages 196 burials per year. At the present time, there are approximately 27,000 burials in the cemetery. The cemetery has a section reserved for the burial of infants and young children. In addition, there are spaces owned by the Veterans Service Office that are reserved for the burial of indigent veterans. Please contact the Veterans Office to see if you qualify.

People visiting Manitowoc from throughout the United States are impressed with the beauty of Evergreen Cemetery. This is due in part to the 6,000 flowers which are planted annually by cemetery workers, as well as the thousands of flowers planted by survivors of loved ones. The flowers planted by the Cemetery staff are planted on the graves of people who deposited money into a perpetual flower care fund. No new accounts were accepted into this fund after July 1, 1975, due to the size of the planting program. People are encouraged to contact local florists to set up contracts for planting of annual flowers on family graves.

Employees at Evergreen Cemetery continue to groom and water the grass, flowers, and trees on a daily basis in the summer months. In addition, dead and diseased trees are removed and new trees are planted yearly. Trees or benches may be donated in memory of a loved one in a location mutually agreed upon by the Cemetery Foreman and the individual(s) donating the tree or bench. (Fruit and some nut trees are not allowed.) Due to the large number of trees and bushes in our Cemetery, lot owners are not allowed to plant trees or bushes on their own. All of these factors contribute to keeping our Cemetery one of the most beautiful cemeteries

Evergreen Cemetery is also noted for the number and variety of trees growing in the cemetery. There are over 1,100 trees, which consist of approximately 40 different species of trees. Some of the more rare varieties include Japanese Gingko, Purple Beach, Camperdown Elm, Buckeye and Ironwood. Because of the abundant supply of food and the protected environment, our Cemetery has become a "wildlife sanctuary." Squirrels, deer, and a large variety of birds, including owls, hawks, and even wild turkey are often spotted in the Cemetery. The squirrels feast on nuts from our various trees, and the birds feast on berries. With the amount of flowers planted here, the deer have a never-ending supply of meals. Hawks are even drawn to our Cemetery because of the large amount of squirrels.

Many people also utilize the quiet and beautiful setting for various types of aerobic activities free from the traffic and noise. On any given day throughout the year you can find walkers, joggers, or cyclists.

WHAT'S NEW WITH THE CEMETERY DEPARTMENT?

In May 2007, two new granite columbariums were installed at Evergreen Cemetery. The columbarium in Harmony Haven (section Q) is for human remains only. The other columbarium in Companions Courtyard (section X) is for the cremated remains of pets and/or their owners. Our columbarium is an octagonal structure similar to an outdoor mausoleum for cremated remains only. Each niche holds two cremated remains, and two inscriptions can be placed on one square niche front. Four consecutive sides of the columbarium will have engraved inscriptions and the other four consecutive sides will have bronze markers. Please call our office at 920-683-4539 for additional information.

TIPS FOR THE CEMETERY MAP

The map of the cemetery may take several minutes to load. Once the full map of the cemetery comes up, you can click on a section letter to bring up a more detailed map showing blocks (larger) and lots (smaller). Individual spaces are not shown in the sections, but in-ground burial spaces generally run from space 1 (south) to space 6 (north) depending on the size of the lot. Most lots have six spaces.

Currently, there are columbariums in sections Q and X. The block identification for the columbariums consists of a number and a letter. For section Q, the number of the first columbarium is one, and for section X, it is 301. Next is the letter of the side that the niche is located on. The letters go clockwise around the columbarium from A (with A being the northern most facing side) to H. Blocks 1A to 1D in section Q and blocks 301A to 301D in section X will have engraved inscriptions. Blocks 1E to 1H in section Q and blocks 301E to 301H in section X will have bronze markers. The lot numbers go according to which panel of the columbarium the niche is located in. The top three panels, lots 1 to 3, have four niches arranged in a square. The bottom panel, lot number four, has two side by side niches. The space number is the number of the niche. Niches are numbered counterclockwise around the niche with niche one being in the upper right-hand corner of the lot panel. In the case of lot number four, which consists of only two niches, niche one is on the right side of the panel and going counterclockwise around the panel, the niche to the left is niche two. This system of numbering niches is designed to follow the numbering system of the in-ground burials which was devised long ago.
