Make a smart move and join us for Drop-In Chess Club at Manitowoc Public Library’s Second Floor Balkansky Community Room from 6-7:30 PM on Wednesday, October 4! The game of chess offers many brainy benefits—and it's just fun! Those of all abilities and ages (6-years plus, please) are welcome, but staff will not offer formal instruction. Chess boards are provided and library materials are available for further learning. No registration is required, but please remember that children under the age of 8 (even prodigies!) must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

Become a Meteorologist with Storm Team 5!2023-10-05T16:00:00Are you captivated by thunderstorms? Ever been caught in a lake effect snowstorm and wondered to yourself, "But why exactly is this happening?" If these thoughts sound familiar, then chances are that you may want to attend "Become a Meteorologist with Storm Team 5." On Thursday, October 5, from 4-5 PM in the Balkansky Community Room. join WFRV-TV’s Meteorologist, Jordan Lamers of Storm Team 5, to find out a bit about how weather works. Jordan will be showing attendees how they can become amateur meteorologists using the equipment in MPL’s new Weather Science Kit. All ages are welcome and no registration is required. This program is made possible through the support of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Region 4.

At Home with Andrew | A Virtual Cooking Tutorial2023-10-05T18:00:00Since the beginning of last summer, Ryan's on York Executive Chef, Andrew Dunbar, has been demystifying the process of cooking restaurant-quality meals at home for you, frequently in the company of his friend and Level 1 Sommelier, Eric Mueller, in his "At Home with Andrew" virtual cooking series. These livestreamed web broadcasts air on both MPL's Facebook page (www.facebook.com/manitowoclibrary) and YouTube channel.
The next installment of "At Home" airs on Thursday, October 5, from 6-7:30 PM. This month, we'll be taking a slightly different approach with a bit more of a wine-forward focus. Eric will be stepping into the spotlight to broaden people's wine knowledge, while Andrew prepares some fancy little food instead of a larger meal. Because ultimately, who wouldn't like to learn how to make an array of amuse-bouche for a swanky evening in? As soon as we know the specifics, we'll definitely pass them along to you. Bon Appétit!

Ledger Art | Native American Visual Storytelling2023-10-09T18:00:00Ledger art is pictorial storytelling and an essential expression of Indigenous perspectives at times when their voices were silenced. It gets its name from the discarded ledgers used in the 19th & 20th centuries for illustration. Learn about the history of this art style and try your hand at it during this amazing presentation in MPL’s Balkansky Community Room on Monday, October 9, from 6-7:30 PM.
The presenter, Mark Denning, is enrolled in the Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin and his ancestry includes Menominee, Mille Lacs Ojibwe, Stockbridge-Munsee, French and English. His Anishinaabe name is Nodaway Benaise and he is Sturgeon Clan. His experience as an educator, lecturer and curriculum specialist in American Indian history and culture has taken him all over the world. His passion is helping teachers, students and businesses understand and appreciate Native American culture from a historical and contemporary point of view, to create greater understanding, teamwork and communication.

You may be chosen to win a really cool prize! On Tuesday, October 24, from 5-7 PM, wear your costume to the Library and take a picture in our Second Floor photo spot with our Ghost Mascot to be entered in a raffle. 2 prizes will be given away! Costume photos will be shared on MPL's Facebook page. A prize will be awarded to the photo with the most reactions! Ghosts and goblins of all ages are welcome! Family-friendly costumes are appreciated. Winners will be announced Monday, October 30.
