[ARCHIVED] October Marks Crime Prevention Month

On Monday, October 4, 2010, Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels, Two Rivers City Manager Greg Buckley, and Manitowoc County Executive Bob Ziegelbauer proclaimed October as Crime Prevention Month 2010 at a 10:00 a.m. proclamation signing at Manitowoc City Hall. All three Manitowoc government officials challenged the entire Manitowoc Community to make crime prevention a top priority. All three paid tribute to the individuals who have taken personal responsibility for their neighborhoods and community organizations that work for the common good.

Crime Prevention Month 2010 reflects that the strong belief that time, money and other resources spent on prevention yield tremendous benefits in reducing crime and making Manitowoc County a stronger, safer and better place to live, work and play. Experience in Manitowoc County proves that grassroots and collaborative action works to keep crime down. For example, all of the Manitowoc County law enforcement agencies along with the Manitowoc County Public Works Department, the Manitowoc County Recycling Center, the Manitowoc County Health Department, the Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention and Healthiest Manitowoc County 2010, formed a collaborative which is known as the Manitowoc County Drug Disposal Collaborative. Since its inception, 16 pharmacy collection dates have resulted in the collection of over 140 pounds of controlled medications, or 48,347 pills, and 2800 lbs of non-controlled substances. Nearly 2000 Manitowoc County households have participated by ridding their medicine cabinets of their unused medications and pharmaceuticals.

During Crime Prevention Month, Manitowoc County law enforcement agencies, civic groups, schools, businesses, and youth organizations from Manitowoc County will showcase their accomplishments, reach out to educate and empower the public through educational campaigns, and explore new partnerships that will help build a stronger Manitowoc community where crime cannot survive.

The Manitowoc County Crime Prevention Committees look forward to seeing you at this year’s
Crime Prevention Day and Pharmacy Drug Collection on Saturday, October 23, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Manitowoc County Expo Grounds.
