We rely on salt to keep our roads and sidewalks safe in the winter. Once you put it down, salt doesn’t go away. Instead it travels into our lakes and streams endangering our freshwater resources. Some places in Wisconsin have chloride from salt infiltrating into our lakes, streams and groundwater. These increased levels threaten our fisheries, tourism, economy, quality of life, and the health of our waters.
To help protect our freshwater resources, the City of Manitowoc is giving away Salt Wise cups to residents. The cups will hold the right amount of salt that should be used to treat about 10 Squares of sidewalk. When you scatter salt, make sure that there is space between the grains. Cups can be picked up at City Hall at the Clerk’s office or the Engineering office while supplies last. We encourage residents to shovel the snow first and be salt wise when spreading salt.
