The Rahr-West Art Museum is pleased to present Being: A Recognition of Self and Other, a juried exhibition of works through September 17, 2023 at the Rahr-West Art Museum.  The theme of the exhibition offers a wide scope for artistic interpretation around issues of personal and social identity. Museum educator Sonia Vasquez, a key player in organizing the exhibit, established the theme of the exhibit, commenting that “recognition and representation in art is crucial in understanding, belonging, and storytelling. The artwork and artists in Being exemplified this in many exceptional forms.”

Art Historian Dr. Sam Watson of the University of Wisconsin Green-Bay served as the exhibit’s juror and announced the winners at a reception on Sunday, August 20, 2023.

Awards were given to the following artists:

First Prize went to Barbara Miner for her photograph Laurie Drake, 25 years at Briggs and Strattonminer-laurie drake-lowres

Second Prize went to Kyle Gorenschek for his oil painting The Price of Solitudegorenschek-price of solitude-lowres

Third Prize went to Amal Azzam for her mixed media work All Eyes on Meazzam-all eyes on me-lowres

This is the first time in recent years the Rahr-West Art Museum organized a juried exhibition.  Dr. Watson praised this effort, saying “I think it's so important for the Rahr-West to do regional juried shows like Being because it highlights the immense amount of talent that we have in the state, and it helps to inspire our artists to produce work on a high level. Of course, art creates community and connects people as well, and this show in particular provides an opportunity to collectively engage with our current cultural moment.”

Museum Director Greg Vadney was pleased with the submissions, noting that “the response from artists, both familiar and from far away, demonstrated the quality and diversity we had hoped for.”
