Camp Vits, a 76.62 acre park, is located by the scenic Manitowoc River with bluffs, ravines, and wildlife areas. This is a great park for mountain biking, hiking, or nature-based activities, such as tree and plant identification or water science activities.
The entrance to Camp Vits can be found near the instersection of Parkview Road and Middle Road. Parking is not available at Camp Vits or on nearby town roads. Visitors may park on Custer Street or any other street that allows parking. At the trail head located on Parkview Road, you will find an information kiosk and a bike repair station.
In December 2020, the City of Manitowoc purchased 4.16 acres of property for park purposes at 1101 South Parkview Road in Manitowoc, formerly known as the Vetter Farm. The land will be used as a parking lot area for Camp Vits Park and will be known as Vetter Trailhead. An agreement was made between the City of Manitowoc and Woodland Dunes for an easement for a pedestrian trail from Vetter Trailhead to Camp Vits on Woodland Dunes property.
A group from Wisconsin Conservation Corps, Inc. (WisCorps) was hired and worked from July 26th through August 6th of this year to clear a dirt pedestrian trail from the parking area through Woodland Dunes property to Camp Vits. Due to a deed restriction and steps, no bicycles are allowed on the trail on Woodland Dunes property. Bicyclists may park a vehicle at Vetter Trailhead and bike on South Parkview Road to the original entrance to Camp Vits Park at 97 South Parkview Road in order to access the mountain bike trail.
The first portion of the trail on Woodland Dunes property will be ADA-accessible. This week, Vinton Construction began work on the parking lot, including staking and tree cutting. The intial gravel driveway and parking lot, which will hold 16 cars, is expected to be completed by November 1st (weather permitting). A vault toilet will be installed near the parking lot this fall. During winter, four bridges from Custom Manufacturing will be installed. Blacktop work will begin in June 2022 with an expected completion date of July 1, 2022.
Half of this project is funded through a Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Grant with the other half being funded from the City’s capital budget.
Mountain Bike Trail
In October 2013, the City's first public mountain bike trail opened at Camp Vits Park. The Northeast Wisconsin Off-Road Mountain Biking Club (NEWOM), which adopted the park under the Parks Division's Adoptable Areas Program, designed and built the trail. The trail consists of a two mile beginner loop with three advanced sections branching off of the beginner loop. An extension was completed to allow access to the river.
Trail closures can occur occasionally due to wet weather, etc. Please check the Facebook page for the Manitowoc County Mountain Bike Trail Club updates on the status of the trail.
